Poetry Page
This new part of our website will contain poems by both myself, and guest poets.

Please Say Me I'm a Poem is a collection of delightful poetry by author and illustrator Maureen Sylvia Capps. The poems were written so children could have fun with the sound bubbles in words; playing with their different rhythms and rhymes while at the same time retaining information.

Maureen is familiar with all the development 'ages and stages' of childhood and loves to match her poems to the interests and needs of children. She has taught all years K-7 and is passionate about oral language; the doorway to literacy.

Many poems within the book appeal to the imagination and are based on Maureen's love of nature, and the magic moments of her own childhood growing up in the country.

There are poems for tiny children, for the 6-8 year old fantasy age, for middle primary and older children. There are also poems for 'big' kids, so this book is for grown-ups too! This is a unique anthology of over 100 poems with some set in a West Australian context.

Maureen has illustrated them with her big-eyed 'little' people. You will discover poems that touch your heart.

They bring out the child in us all.

ROBIN’S PARTY

On fairy wings they travelled ; the journey many hours.
They landed safe in Guildford, among the gum-tree flowers.

Each waved their little fairy-wand at the sugar-gum’s sweet leaves.
And sugar cakes by magic came. “Oh, may we have one, please?”

The royal fairy nodded. Then a birthday dance began.
The tiny fairies twirled around while Robin-red-breast sang.

For she was the guest of honour with her feathered front of red,
And she offered all her tiny friends her special ‘fairy-bread’.

So they flew, and sat beside her with their sun-lit wings a-glow.
Then sang “Happy birthday Robin.” before they had to go!!

On fairy wings they travelled home: the journey many hours.
Their home the Wandoo Woodland mids’t mushrooms and wildflowers.
